Desmond Lamont "Desi" Relaford (born September 16, 1973) is an American former professional baseball player. He was an infielder, which means he played positions like second base, shortstop, or third base. Desi played for many teams in Major League Baseball (MLB), including the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, and Texas Rangers. After his playing career, he became a manager for the Danville Otterbots.
Desi Relaford's Baseball Career
Desi Relaford was known for being a very flexible player. He could play almost any position on the baseball field! During his 11 years in the major leagues, he played every position except first base and catcher. This made him very valuable to his teams.
One time, when he played for the New York Mets, he even pitched in a game. He threw a perfect inning, which means no one got on base against him. He even got a strikeout and threw the ball over 90 miles per hour!
Desi was traded a few times during his career. For example, in 2001 and 2002, he was part of trades that sent him to the San Francisco Giants and then to the Seattle Mariners.
In 2007, Desi signed a contract with the Texas Rangers. He worked hard in spring training to earn a spot on the team. Later that year, he was called up to play for the Rangers when another player was injured. Desi played his last professional game that season.
On March 23, 2021, Desi Relaford became the manager for the Danville Otterbots. This team is part of the new Appalachian League.
