The Design Museum Holon is the first museum in Israel completely focused on design. It's a place where you can discover how everyday objects and big ideas are designed. The museum helps people understand the importance of design in our lives.
History of the Museum
The museum building was designed by a famous Israeli architect and industrial designer named Ron Arad. He worked with Bruno Asa to create its unique look. The museum is located in a new cultural area in Holon. This area also has a central library, a theater, and a movie theater. The design faculty of the Holon Institute of Technology is also nearby.
The Design Museum Holon first opened its doors on March 3, 2010. It quickly became famous. A well-known travel magazine called Conde Nast Traveler even named it one of the new wonders of the world!
What You Can See: Collections and Exhibitions
The museum collects and displays many different types of design items. These items are grouped into four main areas:
- Historical Design: Old designs that show how things have changed over time.
- Contemporary Design: New and modern designs from today.
- Commissioned Works: Special designs made just for the museum.
- Academic Projects: Designs created by students and researchers.
The museum often has exciting new shows. For example, they have shown how food can be designed, or how everyday objects are made. They also explore how feelings and emotions play a part in design. The museum has featured works by famous international designers like Alber Elbaz and Zaha Hadid.
In 2015 and 2017, the museum had special exhibitions about designs for a company called Alessi. These shows featured designs that were planned but never actually made into products. It was a chance to see ideas from many designers, even if their creations didn't go into production.
