History of Desloge
The city of Desloge was started by Firmin V. Desloge II. His father, Firmin René Desloge, came from France and settled in Potosi. The Desloge family became known for their work in mining.
Firmin V. Desloge II learned about mining from his father. He bought many land claims in the areas that are now Desloge and Bonne Terre. He built a plant to process lead ore near Bonne Terre. When that plant burned down in 1883, he looked at his other properties.
He then brought together several local mining companies. This new company was called the Desloge Consolidated Lead Company. In 1887, land was cleared, and homes for company workers were built. This area was called "Desloge Town."
A new mine shaft was dug, and a processing plant was built. It started working in 1892. Desloge, Missouri, and the nearby Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District became very important for lead mining in the US. In 1929, the Desloge family sold their mining company.
Firmin Desloge II passed away in 1930. He left land from the original mining operations to his family. This land had old hand-dug pits and wagon tracks. His family later gave this land to the city for a park. Today, it is called Firmin Desloge Park. It is dedicated to the mining families who worked in the area.
The city of Desloge officially became a city on March 7, 1941. D.E. Brown was its first mayor. In 2012, some of Firmin Desloge II's great-great-grandsons visited the city. They helped dedicate a special bronze medallion given by Steven Rockwell Desloge.
