Who Was Desmond Broe?

Desmond Broe came from a family of artists. His father, Leo, was also a sculptor. They even had a family business in Dublin where they created sculptures. Desmond's sister, Irene, was a sculptor too!

Desmond's Education and Early Work

Desmond went to the National College of Art and Design. This is a special school where artists learn their craft. In 1943, he won the Taylor Scholarship for his excellent work in modelling. This award helped him continue his studies.

His Art at the Olympics

Did you know art used to be part of the Olympic Games? Desmond's work was chosen for the art competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics. This was a big honor for him!

Famous Artworks by Desmond Broe

Desmond also carved the headstone for his family's burial plot. He also created the IRA Memorial in Athlone. This memorial remembers important events in Irish history.

Desmond Broe's son, Dimitri, continued the family tradition. He took over the sculpting business. It became known as Monumental Sculptors. This shows how art and creativity ran through the Broe family for generations.
