What the Memorial Looks Like

The memorial is a statue made from light-colored limestone. It shows a life-sized man dressed in the uniform worn by the Irish Republican Army during the time it represents. The statue stands on a base that has two levels, called a two-stage plinth. Metal railings surround the memorial, keeping it safe. It is also set back a little from the main road.

The Story Behind the Memorial

The talented sculptor who created this limestone statue was Desmond Broe. He came from a well-known family of artists in Harold's Cross, County Dublin. The memorial was officially shown to the public in 1953. You can find it at the corner of Church Street and Custume Place. This spot is very close to the banks of the River Shannon, one of Ireland's longest rivers.

Who was the Irish Republican Army?

The Irish Republican Army, often called the IRA, was a group of people who wanted Ireland to be an independent country. They fought for Ireland to be free from British rule. This group played a big part in Ireland's fight for independence.

The Irish War of Independence

The Irish War of Independence was a conflict that took place from 1919 to 1921. It was a fight between Irish forces, including the IRA, and the British government. The goal for many Irish people was to gain full independence for their country. This war led to the creation of the Irish Free State.

The Irish Civil War

After the War of Independence, Ireland faced another conflict. The Irish Civil War happened from 1922 to 1923. This war was fought between two groups of Irish people. They disagreed about the treaty that ended the War of Independence. This memorial remembers those from Athlone who were involved in these important historical events.
