Det Kvindelige Velgørende Selskab (which means The Women's Charitable Society) was an important organization in Denmark. It was started in 1815 by King Frederick VI of Denmark. He got the idea after visiting the Congress of Vienna in Austria.

This organization helped people for a very long time, until it closed on 28 October 2004. Its last meeting was held at the Garnison Church in Copenhagen.

What the Society Did

The Women's Charitable Society had a special connection to the Danish royal family.

Royal Support

Queen Marie of Denmark was the first "protector" of the organization. This meant she was a special supporter and leader. After her, other members of the Danish royal family continued in this role.

The organization always celebrated Queen Marie's birthday. It was a special day for them to remember her support.

Helping Domestic Workers

One of the main things the society did was to help domestic workers. These were people, often women, who worked in other people's homes, like housemaids.

The society gave awards to domestic workers who had worked for a very long time. Many domestic workers used to leave their jobs around age 25-30 to start their own families. The awards encouraged them to stay in their jobs.

Education and Child Care

The organization also ran a school just for housemaid girls. This school helped them learn important skills for their work and lives.

In 1828, the society opened something very new for Denmark: its first daycare center. This was a place where young children could be looked after during the day.

Why the Society Closed

The Women's Charitable Society closed in 2004 because its activities were no longer as needed. Over time, the way people lived and worked changed a lot.

For example, the role of housemaids began to change. In some places, modern nanny girls started to take over some of the tasks that housemaids used to do.

When the organization closed, a book was published about its history. It was called For lang och tro tjeneste. Det Kvindelige Velgørende Selskab 1815-2004 by Niels Gustav Bardenfleth. The title means "For long and loyal service."
