Detlef Schrempf (born January 21, 1963) is a famous German-American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the Washington Huskies from 1981 to 1985. The Dallas Mavericks picked him in the 1985 NBA draft. He was the eighth player chosen overall.
Detlef was an All-NBA Third Team member once. He was also a three-time NBA All-Star. He was the first European player ever to become an NBA All-Star. Schrempf also won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award twice. He played in the NBA for 16 seasons. He played for the Indiana Pacers, the Seattle SuperSonics, and the Portland Trail Blazers. In 1996, he reached the NBA Finals with the SuperSonics. He also played for the German national team in the 1984 and 1992 Summer Olympics. Detlef Schrempf was added to the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2021.

High School and College Star
Detlef Schrempf was born in Leverkusen, West Germany. He played for youth basketball teams there. Then, he moved to the United States for one year. He attended Centralia High School in Centralia, Washington.
In 1981, as a senior, he led his team to win the state championship. He scored 24 points in the final game. After high school, he went to the University of Washington in Seattle. He played for the Huskies college team.
With Schrempf, the Huskies won their conference titles in 1984 and 1985. They also made it to the "Sweet 16" in the 1984 NCAA tournament. He was named team captain in his final year. During his college career, he scored 1,449 points. He was also named to the All-Pac-10 First Team. In 1995, he was added to the Husky Hall of Fame.
NBA Career Highlights
The Dallas Mavericks chose Detlef Schrempf in the 1985 NBA draft. He was the eighth player picked. He became a regular player after being traded to the Indiana Pacers in 1989. With the Mavericks, he was second in the NBA for three-point shooting in 1986–87.
In 1991 and 1992, he won the NBA Sixth Man Award two times in a row. This award goes to the best player who usually comes off the bench. In the 1992–93 season, he was amazing. He was the only NBA player to be in the top 25 for scoring, rebounding, and assists. He was also the first European player chosen for the NBA All-Star Game. He played in three All-Star Games during his career.
After the 1992–93 season, Schrempf was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics. He was very accurate with three-point shots in the 1994–95 season. He made 51.4% of his three-pointers. He also led the NBA in offensive rating that season. On the SuperSonics, he played with stars like Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp. In 1996, his team reached the NBA Finals. They lost to Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls in six games. Schrempf was the first German-born NBA player to reach the NBA Finals. He played in the NBA All-Star game in 1995 and 1997 while with the Sonics.
Schrempf left the Sonics in 1999. He then signed with the Portland Trail Blazers. He played for them until he retired from basketball in 2001. He played in 1,136 regular season games and 114 playoff games. After retiring, he became an assistant coach for the Seattle SuperSonics in 2006.
Playing for His Country
Detlef Schrempf also played for the West Germany national team. His first big tournament was the EuroBasket in 1983. He was the team's top scorer in that event. A year later, he led the team in the 1984 Olympics.
In 1985, Schrempf helped West Germany achieve their best EuroBasket finish at that time. He played for the German team one last time at the 1992 Olympics.
Helping Others
In 1996, Detlef Schrempf started the Detlef Schrempf Foundation. This foundation helps local charities. In 2012, he won an award for his community work. His foundation hosts a golf tournament every summer. It has raised about $10 million for children's charities. These charities are mainly in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.
Life After Basketball
Detlef Schrempf is married to Mari Schrempf. They have two sons, Alex and Michael. Since 2010, Schrempf has worked in business development. He works at Coldstream Capital, a wealth management company in Seattle.
