Geography of the Deux Orignaux River

Where is the Deux Orignaux River Located?

The Deux Orignaux River is surrounded by several other important lakes and rivers.

Where Does the River Start?

The Deux Orignaux River begins at the end of a lake called "Lac des Orignaux." This lake is about 17.7 kilometers (11 miles) long and sits at an elevation of 337 meters (1,106 feet) above sea level. The lake stretches out in a north-south direction. There's a part of the lake called the "Bay of the Head of Heron" in the southwest, which is only 0.7 kilometers (0.4 miles) east of the Chibougamau River.

The point where the "Lac des Orignaux" flows out is roughly in the middle of its eastern shore. This starting point is:

  • 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) northwest of where Kapunapotagen Lake flows out.
  • 7.1 kilometers (4.4 miles) north of where the "Deux Orignaux River" officially begins.
  • 14.2 kilometers (8.8 miles) northeast of where the Obatogamau River meets the Chibougamau River.
  • 114.3 kilometers (71 miles) northeast of where Goéland Lake flows into the Waswanipi River.
  • 35.8 kilometers (22.2 miles) west of the center of Chapais.
  • 69.1 kilometers (42.9 miles) southwest of downtown Chibougamau.
  • 300 kilometers (186 miles) east of where the Nottaway River flows into James Bay.

How Does the River Flow?

From its source at "Lac des Orignaux," the "Deux Orignaux River" flows for about 11.3 kilometers (7 miles) in several parts:

  • First, it flows 3.9 kilometers (2.4 miles) to the southeast, going through Kapunapotagen Lake, which is also at an elevation of 337 meters (1,106 feet).
  • Next, it travels 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) to the southwest, reaching the bridge of Quebec route 113.
  • Then, it continues 3.3 kilometers (2.1 miles) southwest to the western end of "Lac des Miserables," which is at an altitude of 329 meters (1,079 feet).
  • Finally, it flows 0.4 kilometers (0.2 miles) west to its mouth.

The "Deux Orignaux River" empties into a bay on the northeast shore of Society Lake. Society Lake then flows south for 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) to its own outlet. This lake's water then joins the Obatogamau River. From there, the water flows west along the Obatogamau River, then southwest through the Chibougamau River, until it reaches the eastern shore of Goéland Lake. The water from Goéland Lake then flows northwest through the Waswanipi River, which eventually leads to Lake Matagami.

What Does the Name Mean?

The name "rivière des Deux Orignaux" means "Two Mooses River" in English. This name was officially recognized on September 11, 1987, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the organization responsible for naming places in Quebec.
