The Devil's Chimney: A Cool Rock Path
What is the Devil's Chimney?
Imagine a giant, natural staircase carved right into a cliff! That's pretty much what the Devil's Chimney is. It's a natural opening in the rocks, like a deep, narrow canyon. People can walk down these steps to explore the unique landscape below.
Exploring the Path
The top of the Devil's Chimney is easy to find. It's near the Smuggler's Haven Tearooms on St Boniface Down. This area is part of a lovely parkland on top of the cliffs. You can get there from the Leeson Road car park. There's even a bus stop nearby if you're using public transport.
The Devil's Chimney is one of several paths that connect the top of the cliffs to the Isle of Wight Undercliff. The Undercliff is a unique area formed by ancient landslides. The path itself follows a natural crack in the Upper Greensand rocks. These rocks form the top part of the cliffs. Once you're through the "chimney," the path continues down into the Landslip. It's known as footpath V65C and eventually meets the coastal path V65A at the bottom.
Nature and Nearby Sights
The Devil's Chimney is part of the Bonchurch Landslip nature reserve. This means it's a protected area where nature can thrive. A group called Gift to Nature helps manage this reserve. They work to keep it beautiful and safe for everyone to enjoy.
Did you know there's another similar rock path nearby? It's called the Chink and is only about 200 yards north of the Devil's Chimney. Both offer amazing views and a chance to explore the island's unique geology.
