Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Devon Closewool is a special kind of domestic sheep. It first came from the Exmoor area in southwest England. This sheep breed is mostly raised for its meat.

About the Devon Closewool Sheep

The Devon Closewool sheep was created in the late 1800s. Farmers crossed local Exmoor female sheep, called ewes, with a male Devon Longwool sheep, called a ram. This mix helped create a new, strong sheep breed.

Where Do They Come From?

The first records of Devon Closewool sheep go back to 1894. A special group, called a "breed society," was started in 1923. This group helps keep track of the sheep and makes sure the breed stays healthy. Over time, these sheep have spread to other areas near Exmoor.

What Do They Look Like?

Devon Closewool sheep have white faces. Their wool, called a fleece, is thick and medium in length. Both the male rams and female ewes are naturally polled. This means they do not have horns.

These sheep are medium-sized. An average ewe weighs about 55 to 60 kilograms (121 to 132 pounds). A ram is heavier, weighing around 90 kilograms (198 pounds). They look strong and balanced. They are also very hardy, which means they can live well in tough outdoor places. They are perfect for open grasslands and heaths (open, wild land) in upland areas.
