Dewey, also known as Gibraltar, is a small place in Skagit County, Washington, United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it's a settlement that doesn't have its own local government. Instead, it's managed by the larger county.

History of Dewey

The area we now call Dewey has had a few different names over time. It was first known as Deception. Later, it was called Fidalgo City.

In 1898, the community got its current name, Dewey. It was named after George Dewey. He was a famous naval officer during the Spanish–American War. This war happened between the United States and Spain.

Around 1891, a special kind of train line was built. It was an interurban railway, which is like an electric train that connects towns. This railway ran between Anacortes and Fidalgo City. Its main goal was to help get "land grants." Land grants were like special permissions to own land. The railway didn't run many trips before it stopped working.
