Dexter is a small community in Lane County, Oregon, United States. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own city government. Dexter is located near Dexter Reservoir, also known as Dexter Lake. This lake is a reservoir on the Middle Fork Willamette River and is found along Oregon Route 58.

History of Dexter

How Dexter Got Its Name

Dexter got its start a long time ago. A post office was opened here in 1872. It was first named "Butte Disappointment." This name came from a local landmark that was named in 1848.

However, the post office name changed in 1875. It was renamed "Dexter." People believe it was named after a "Dexter" brand cook stove. The family of the person who ran the post office owned this type of stove.
