Dharmasetu's Rule and Achievements
Dharmasetu was a powerful leader who helped Srivijaya grow even stronger. He was known for his political skills and for building important religious sites.
Expanding the Srivijaya Empire
Under Dharmasetu's leadership, Srivijaya became even bigger. He successfully brought the kingdom of Pan Pan under Srivijaya's control. Pan Pan was located in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula. This happened before the year 775 CE. Bringing Pan Pan into Srivijaya's "sphere of influence" meant that Srivijaya had a lot of power and control over that area.
Building Temples and Leaving a Mark
We know about Dharmasetu from an old stone carving called an inscription. This inscription was found at an ancient monastery in Nakhon Si Thammarat, which is in modern-day Thailand. The Ligor inscription tells us that Dharmasetu ordered the building of three special temples. These temples were dedicated to important figures in Buddhism: Bodhisattva Padmapani, Vajrapani, and the Buddha. These temples were built in a place called Ligor.
Connecting Dynasties: Srivijaya and Sailendra
The Ligor inscription also tells us something very interesting. It says that Dharmasetu was the leader of the Sailendra dynasty. This dynasty ruled the island of Java. This is the first time we find a clear link between the Srivijaya kingdom and the Sailendra dynasty. This connection became very important for both kingdoms.
Dharmasetu's daughter, named Dewi Tara, later married a prince from the Sailendra dynasty. His name was Samaratunga. Samaratunga later became the ruler of Srivijaya around the year 792. This marriage made the relationship between Srivijaya and the Sailendra dynasty even closer and stronger.
Who Ruled After Dharmasetu?
Dharmasetu was succeeded by his son-in-law, Sangramadhananjaya, around the year 782. This shows how royal families often connected through marriage to keep power within a close circle.
