Dhiruben Gordhanbhai Patel (Gujarati: ધીરુબેન પટેલ) was an important Indian writer. She was born on May 29, 1926, and passed away on March 10, 2023. Dhiruben was known for writing novels, plays, and short stories. She also translated books from one language to another.

Life of Dhiruben Patel

Dhiruben Patel was born in Vadodara (then called Baroda) in 1926. Her father, Gordhanbhai Patel, was a journalist. Her mother, Gangaben Patel, was a political activist. This means her mother worked to make changes in society.

Early Life and Education

Dhiruben grew up in Santacruz, a part of Mumbai. She went to Poddar school in Mumbai. Later, she studied English at Elphinstone College. She earned her B.A. degree in 1945 and her M.A. degree in 1949. She also taught English at colleges for some time.

Career and Contributions

Dhiruben Patel worked for a publishing company called Anand Publishers. Later, she started her own publishing house, Kalki Prakashan, in 1963. From 1966 to 1975, she was the editor of Sudha, a Gujarati magazine. She also led important literary groups. She was the President of the Gujarat Sahitya Sabha. She also served as the President of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad from 2003 to 2004. One of her plays, Bhavni Bhavai, was even made into a film.

Dhiruben Patel lived a long life, passing away at the age of 96.

Dhiruben Patel wrote many different kinds of books. She wrote novels, short stories, and plays for radio and stage. Her writing was inspired by the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi.
