The areas around Cape Lookout and Shackleford Banks in North Carolina were special. They were the only places south of New York on the Eastern United States where people hunted whales from the shore. These spots were perfect for whaling because they were close to the Gulf Stream. This warm ocean current was near the path where North Atlantic right whales and sperm whales migrated.

Diamond City was the biggest town in this area. It had a steady population of about 500 people. Many of them were involved in the whaling industry. Whaling was an important part of life and work for the people living there.
