Dibyendu Barua, born on October 27, 1966, is a famous Indian chess player. He holds the special title of Grandmaster, which is the highest title a chess player can achieve. He was the second Indian player, after Viswanathan Anand, to become a Grandmaster. Dibyendu Barua has also won the Indian Chess Championship three times!

Becoming a Chess Grandmaster
Dibyendu Barua was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh. His family later moved to Kolkata in West Bengal, India.
Early Chess Journey
Barua started playing chess at a young age. In 1978, when he was just 12 years old, he became the youngest player ever to join the Indian Chess Championship. This was a big achievement for someone so young!
In 1982, Barua showed his amazing talent by defeating Viktor Korchnoi. Korchnoi was one of the top chess players in the world at that time. This happened at the Lloyd's Bank Tournament in London.
National Champion and Awards
In 1983, Dibyendu Barua became the youngest national chess champion in India. This record was later broken by Viswanathan Anand in 1986. Barua went on to win the national championship two more times, in 1998 and 2001.
Because of his great success, he received the Arjuna Award in 1983. This is a very important sports award in India.
Achieving Grandmaster Status
To become a Grandmaster, a chess player needs to achieve certain scores called "norms" in big tournaments.
- Barua earned his first Grandmaster norm in September 1989. This happened at the Natwest Trophy in London.
- His second norm came in 1990 at the 29th Chess Olympiad in Novi Sad. He played exceptionally well, earning a gold medal on the second board.
- Finally, in 1991, he earned his third and final Grandmaster norm. This happened at the Duncan GM tournament in Kolkata. With this, he officially became a Grandmaster!
Dibyendu Barua also competed in international youth championships. He finished third in the World Under-14 championship in Mexico in 1979. The next year, in 1980, he placed fourth in the World Sub-Junior championship.
Personal Life
In 1997, Dibyendu Barua married Saheli Dhar. She is also a talented chess player and holds the title of Women International Master.
