Dickon Amiss Thomas Mitchell was born on October 8, 1978. He is a politician and a lawyer from Grenada. Since June 24, 2022, he has been the prime minister of Grenada. He is also the leader of a political party called the National Democratic Congress (NDC) since 2021. He became prime minister after his party won the election in 2022.
Early Life and Law Career
Dickon Mitchell grew up in Petit Esperance, a place in Saint David, Grenada. He studied law at the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill. In 2002, he finished his legal studies at Hugh Wooding Law School.
After becoming a lawyer, he worked at a law firm called Grant, Joseph & Co. Later, in 2017, he started his own law firm, Mitchell & Co.
Political Career
Dickon Mitchell became the leader of the National Democratic Congress party on October 31, 2021.
Becoming Prime Minister
Mitchell's party, the National Democratic Congress, won the election in 2022. They received a little over 51% of the votes. This meant they won nine out of the fifteen available seats in the government.
After the election win, Mitchell said he would ask the governor-general, Dame Cécile La Grenade, to make June 24 a public holiday. He wanted people to celebrate "liberation day" and the victory for Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique.
On June 24, Dickon Mitchell officially became the ninth prime minister of Grenada. He took over from Keith Mitchell (who is not related to him). He promised to stop favoritism in Grenada. He also wanted to change the way elections are run.
He also became the Minister of Finance of Grenada. He created a new government department called the Ministry of Mobilization, Implementation and Transformation. During a speech, he promised to pay teachers their salaries that had been held back.
Dickon Mitchell supports Grenada becoming a republic. This means the country would no longer have the British monarch as its head of state. He hopes this change will happen while he is prime minister.
