Becoming Prime Minister
In the 2022 Grenadian general election, Dickon Mitchell's party, the National Democratic Congress, won the election. They received a little over 51% of the votes. They also won nine out of the fifteen available seats in the government.
After winning, Mitchell said he would ask the Governor-General, Dame Cécile La Grenade, to make June 24 a public holiday. This day would be for people to celebrate their victory for Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique.
On June 24, 2022, Dickon Mitchell officially became the ninth prime minister of Grenada. He took over from Keith Mitchell, who is not related to him. He promised to stop unfair favoritism in Grenada. He also wanted to improve how elections are run. He took on another role as the Minister of Finance of Grenada. He also created a new government department called the Ministry of Mobilization, Implementation and Transformation. During a speech, he promised to pay teachers their salaries that had been held back.
Dickon Mitchell supports Grenada becoming a republic. This means the country would have its own head of state, instead of the British monarch. He hopes this will happen while he is in charge.
