Dame Cécile Ellen Fleurette La Grenade was born on December 30, 1952. She is a Grenadian food scientist. Since 2013, she has served as the governor-general of Grenada. The Governor-General is the representative of the King of the United Kingdom in Grenada. This role is mostly ceremonial, like a head of state, while the Prime Minister leads the government.
Early Life and Education
Cécile La Grenade was born in La Borie, a place in Saint George Parish, Grenada. She is one of five daughters. Her father, Allan A. La Grenade, was a civil servant, and her mother, Sibyl Sylvester-La Grenade, was a registered nurse.
Her grandmother, Eva Sylvester, was a very important person. She was the first woman in the British Windward Islands to be elected to her country's legislative council. This happened in 1952, shortly after everyone in Grenada gained the right to vote.
Dame Cécile La Grenade is a food scientist. She studied in the United States. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of the West Indies. She also has a master's degree and a doctorate in food science from the University of Maryland at College Park.
Before becoming Governor-General, she worked in different roles. From 2007 to 2010, she was the Chairman of the Public Service Commission. This position was given to her by the previous Governor-General, Sir Daniel Williams.
Serving as Governor-General
Cécile La Grenade became the Governor-General of Grenada in 2013. She was made a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George by Queen Elizabeth II on July 11, 2014. This is a special honor.
As Governor-General, Dame Cécile La Grenade has done many important things.
- In 2018, she officially opened the new Grenadian Parliament building. This is where the country's laws are made.
- After the 2018 general election, one political party won all the seats. To make sure there was an opposition, she appointed members from the losing party to the Senate. This helped ensure different voices were heard in the government.
- She supports restoring Grenada's old buildings. She is a patron of groups that work to protect places like Government House and York House.

When Queen Elizabeth II passed away in September 2022, Dame Cécile La Grenade became the first Grenadian Governor-General to serve under two monarchs: Queen Elizabeth II and now Charles III. She said that the Queen served with "amazing dedication." Dame Cécile La Grenade represented Grenada at the Queen's funeral in the United Kingdom. She also represented Grenada at the Coronation of King Charles III in 2023, alongside Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell.
