Sir Carlyle Arnold Glean (born February 11, 1932 – died December 21, 2021) was an important politician from Grenada. He served as the Governor-General of Grenada, which is like the Queen's representative, from 2008 to 2013.
Early Life and Education
Carlyle Glean was born in a town called Gouyave in Grenada on February 11, 1932. At that time, Grenada was part of the British Windward Islands.
He went to college at the University of Calgary where he earned a degree in Education. Later, he continued his studies at the University of East Anglia in 1982, getting a Master of Arts degree.
Career in Politics
Sir Carlyle Glean had an important role in Grenada's government. From 1990 to 1995, he was the Minister of Education. This meant he was in charge of schools and learning for the whole country. He worked under Prime Minister Sir Nicholas Brathwaite. After this, he decided to retire from politics for a while.
In 2008, he was chosen to be the Governor-General of Grenada by Elizabeth II, who is the Queen of Grenada. The Governor-General acts on behalf of the Queen in Grenada. He held this important position until 2013. After him, Dame Cécile La Grenade became the next Governor-General.
Personal Life and Legacy
Sir Carlyle Glean passed away on December 21, 2021, when he was 89 years old. Many important people in Grenada, including the current Governor-General Dame La Grenade and Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, shared their sadness and respect for him. The National Democratic Congress also honored his memory.
