Dicrastylis is a special group of plants that belong to the Lamiaceae family, also known as the mint family. These plants were first officially described in 1855. All the different types of Dicrastylis plants are found only in Australia. This means they are endemic to Australia, and you won't find them growing naturally anywhere else in the world! The main plant that helps define this group is called Dicrastylis fulva.
What Dicrastylis Plants Look Like
Dicrastylis plants have interesting fruits. Their fruit is not soft or juicy like a berry. Instead, it's a dry, hard fruit that doesn't open up when it's ripe. Inside, it has four small sections, and each section usually holds one or two tiny seeds.
The outside part of the flower, called the calyx, has five fuzzy, woolly parts. These parts protect the flower before it blooms.
