Serving as Interior Minister

From 1995 to 1998, Mr. Opertti served as the Interior Minister of Uruguay. The Interior Minister is in charge of a country's internal security, like police and public safety. He worked in this role during the presidency of Julio María Sanguinetti.

Becoming Foreign Minister

After his time as Interior Minister, Didier Opertti became the Minister of Foreign Relations. This role means he was Uruguay's top diplomat, dealing with other countries. He held this important position from 1998 until March 1, 2005. He served under two presidents: first Julio María Sanguinetti and then Jorge Batlle.

International Work

Leading the United Nations General Assembly

Didier Opertti also had a very important international role. From 1998 to 1999, he was the president of the United Nations General Assembly. The United Nations General Assembly is where all 193 member countries of the UN meet to discuss global issues and make decisions. Being its president is a big honor and responsibility.

Working with ALADI

As of 2006, Mr. Opertti also served as the Secretary-General of ALADI. ALADI stands for the Latin American Integration Association. It's an organization that helps countries in Latin America work together on trade and economic matters.
