How the UNGA President is Chosen
The General Assembly meets every year. Their main session starts in September. The President chosen for that year will lead all meetings. This includes any special or emergency meetings that happen over the next year.
The job of President rotates each year. It moves between five main groups of countries around the world. These groups are:
- The African Group
- The Asia-Pacific Group
- The Eastern European Group
- The Latin American and Caribbean Group
- The Western European and Others Group
Interestingly, some of the world's biggest and most powerful countries have never held this position. This includes the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. Countries like Japan have also not held the presidency.
A few countries have had someone elected as President twice. These are Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Hungary, and Nigeria. All other countries have had a President only once.
Besides the President, 21 Vice-Presidents are also chosen for each session. These Vice-Presidents have similar powers and duties. The President can ask one of them to lead a meeting if they cannot be there.
