Imre Hollai (Hungarian: Hollai Imre) was an important diplomat and politician from Hungary. He was born on January 22, 1925, and passed away on November 22, 2017. He is best known for being the President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1982 to 1983. Imre Hollai's Early Life and Career
Imre Hollai was born in a place called Újpest on January 22, 1925. Újpest is now a part of the big city of Budapest. His parents were Béla Hollai and Emma Putz.
In 1945, Imre Hollai joined the Hungarian Communist Party. He was trained as a mechanist, which is someone who works with machines. In 1949, he started working for the Hungarian foreign service. This means he began a career helping Hungary deal with other countries.
He continued his education and graduated from the Lenin Institute at Eötvös Loránd University in 1952. From 1949 to 1955, he also worked as an adviser for international relations within the Hungarian Working People's Party.
Diplomatic Roles and Achievements
Imre Hollai had many important roles in diplomacy. From 1955 to 1960, he served as Hungary's Deputy Representative to the United Nations. He lived in New York City during this time.
After returning to Hungary, he led the foreign relations department for the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party from 1960 to 1963. Then, he became the Hungarian Ambassador to Greece and Cyprus. He held this position from 1964 to 1970.
From 1970 to 1974, he served as Hungary's Deputy Foreign Minister. This meant he was one of the top officials helping to manage Hungary's relationships with other countries.
Leading the United Nations General Assembly
Imre Hollai became Hungary's Ambassador to the United Nations again from 1974 to 1980. After that, he was Hungary's Deputy Foreign Minister once more, from 1980 to 1984.
While he was in this role, he achieved a very high honor. He served as the President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1982 to 1983. This is a very important leadership position in the UN. He was known for his intelligence and ability to connect with people from different countries.
His success and popularity made some people in Hungary's government feel uneasy. Because of this, he was asked to return to his earlier job as ambassador to Greece and Cyprus in 1984.
Imre Hollai officially retired from his diplomatic career on February 28, 1989. Even after retiring, he remained active. He was a member of the Council of Presidents of the General Assembly. This group gives advice to the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Imre Hollai passed away on November 22, 2017, at the age of 92.
