Joseph Deiss (born 18 January 1946) is a Swiss economist and politician. He was a Member of the Swiss Federal Council from 1999 to 2006. This council is like the government's cabinet in Switzerland.
He belonged to the Christian Democratic People's Party. Joseph Deiss first led the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (1999–2002). Later, he moved to the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (2003–2006). In 2010, he was chosen to be the President of the United Nations General Assembly. This is a very important role at the United Nations.

Joseph Deiss's Political Journey
Early Steps in Politics
Joseph Deiss began his political career in 1981. He represented his party in the Grand Council of Fribourg. This is a regional parliament in Switzerland. In 1991, he became the president of this parliament for a year.
From 1982 to 1996, Deiss also served as the mayor of his hometown, Barberêche. In 1991, he was elected to the National Council. This is one of the two houses of the Swiss Parliament. From 1995 to 1996, he was the vice president of the Foreign Affairs Committee. This committee deals with Switzerland's relationships with other countries. In 1996, he led a committee working on changes to the Swiss Federal Constitution. This is like Switzerland's main rulebook.
Serving in the Swiss Federal Council
Joseph Deiss was elected to the Swiss Federal Council on 11 March 1999. This council is the highest executive body in Switzerland. It has seven members who lead different government departments.
When he was in office, he led two important government departments:
- The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (from 1999 to 2002). This department handles Switzerland's international relations.
- The Federal Department of Economic Affairs (from 2003 to 2006). This department deals with the country's economy.
In 2004, Joseph Deiss was elected President of Switzerland. This role rotates among the Federal Council members each year. He was the only member from his party remaining in the Council at that time. On 27 April 2006, Joseph Deiss decided to step down from the Federal Council. Doris Leuthard took over his position on 1 August 2006.
Joseph Deiss's Professional Life
Joseph Deiss first studied economics and social sciences at the University of Fribourg. He then earned a special degree called a doctorate from the same university. After that, he did research at King's College at the University of Cambridge in England.
After his research, Joseph Deiss became an economics lecturer at the University of Fribourg. From 1983, he was also a visiting professor at other Swiss universities. These included ETH Zurich, University of Lausanne, and University of Geneva.
From 1993 to 1996, Joseph Deiss worked as the National Price Supervisor. This role involved overseeing prices in the country. He then returned to the University of Fribourg. There, he became the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. He also held leadership roles in some companies during this time.
In 2009, Joseph Deiss received an honorary degree from Business School Lausanne. This award recognized his efforts to strengthen Switzerland's political and economic standing.

Joseph Deiss is married and has three sons. He is also an Honorary Member of The International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation and AFIS Swiss International Civil Servants Association.
