Joseph Deiss was born on January 18, 1946. He is a Swiss economist and politician. He was a member of the Swiss Federal Council from 1999 to 2006. This council is like the government's cabinet in Switzerland.
Deiss is part of the Christian Democratic People's Party of Switzerland. He first led the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (1999–2002). Later, he moved to the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (2003–2006). In 2010, he was chosen to be the President of the United Nations General Assembly.

Joseph Deiss's Journey in Politics
How Did Joseph Deiss Start in Politics?
Joseph Deiss began his political journey in 1981. He became a representative for his party in the Grand Council of Fribourg. This is a local parliament in the Fribourg region of Switzerland.
In 1991, he became the president of this local parliament for one year. From 1982 to 1996, Deiss also served as the mayor of his hometown, Barberêche.
In 1991, he was elected to the National Council. This is one of the two houses of the Swiss Parliament. From 1995 to 1996, he was the vice president of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the National Council. In 1996, he led a committee that worked on updating the Swiss Federal Constitution.
Joseph Deiss's Time in the Swiss Government
On March 11, 1999, Joseph Deiss was elected to the Swiss Federal Council. This is the highest executive body in Switzerland. He joined the council along with Ruth Metzler.
While in office, he was in charge of two important government departments:
- Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (from 1999 to 2002)
- Federal Department of Economic Affairs (from 2003 to 2006)
In 2004, Joseph Deiss was elected President of the Swiss Confederation. This is a special role that rotates among the Federal Council members each year. He was the only member from his party remaining in the council at that time.
On April 27, 2006, Deiss decided to step down from the Federal Council. Doris Leuthard took over his position on August 1, 2006.
Joseph Deiss's Professional Life
Joseph Deiss first studied economics and social sciences at the University of Fribourg. He then earned a doctorate degree from the same university. After that, he did research at King's College at the University of Cambridge in England.
Later, Joseph Deiss became an economics lecturer at the University of Fribourg. In 1983, he was a visiting professor at other Swiss universities, including ETH Zurich, University of Lausanne, and University of Geneva.
From 1993 to 1996, Joseph Deiss worked as the National Price Supervisor for Switzerland. He then returned to the University of Fribourg. There, he became the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. During this time, he also led the Board of Directors at Schumacher AG and was chairman of the Raiffeisenbank in Haut-Lac.
In 2009, Joseph Deiss received an honorary degree from Business School Lausanne. This award recognized his efforts to strengthen Switzerland's political and economic standing.
Personal Life
Joseph Deiss is married and has three sons.
He is also an Honorary Member of The International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation and AFIS Swiss International Civil Servants Association.
