Philémon Yunji Yang (born 14 June 1947) is an important politician from Cameroon. He was the Prime Minister of Cameroon for many years, from 2009 to 2019. Before that, he worked in different government jobs and was an ambassador. He spent over 20 years representing Cameroon in Canada.
Philémon Yang is the longest-serving Prime Minister in Cameroon's history. He held the position for more than nine years. In June 2024, he was chosen for a big new role. He will become the President of the United Nations General Assembly for its 79th meeting. His term starts on 10 September 2024.

Early Life and Education
Philémon Yang was born in a place called Jikejem-Oku. This area is in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. He went to the University of Yaoundé where he studied law.
His Career Journey
Starting in Government
After finishing school, Yang worked as a prosecutor. This means he helped with legal cases in the court of appeal in Buea. In 1975, he joined the government as a Deputy Minister. He was in charge of Territorial Administration. Later, in 1979, he became the Minister of Mines and Energy. He stayed in this job until 1984.
Representing Cameroon in Canada
From 1984 to 2004, Philémon Yang worked as an ambassador in Canada. An ambassador is a country's official representative in another country. From 1995, he was called a High Commissioner because Cameroon joined the Commonwealth of Nations. He was the main diplomat for Cameroon in Canada for 20 years.
During his time in Canada, he worked to get help and support for his country. He also led Cameroon's team in talks about the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. This is an international agreement about keeping living things safe.
Back to Politics at Home
In 2004, Yang returned to Cameroon. He was appointed as an Assistant Secretary-General in the President's office. In 2008, he became the head of the board for the Cameroon Airlines Corporation. This is the national airline company.
Becoming Prime Minister of Cameroon

On 30 June 2009, President Paul Biya chose Philémon Yang to be the new Prime Minister of Cameroon. He took over from Ephraïm Inoni. This was a big change in the government. The President said that some ministers moved to new jobs, and new people joined the government.
People hoped for positive changes. Yang served as Prime Minister until 4 January 2019.
Leading the UN General Assembly
On 6 June 2024, Philémon Yang was chosen for a very important international role. He was elected to be the President of the United Nations General Assembly. This is for the 79th session of the UN General Assembly. He will take over from Dennis Francis on 10 September 2024. The UN General Assembly is where all 193 member countries of the United Nations meet to discuss important global issues.
