Philémon Yunji Yang is an important politician from Cameroon, a country in Africa. He was born on June 14, 1947. He served as the Prime Minister of Cameroon for a long time, from 2009 to 2019. Before that, he worked in different government jobs and as an ambassador.
In June 2024, Philémon Yang was chosen for a very big role: to be the President of the United Nations General Assembly. He started this job on September 10, 2024. This means he helps lead important meetings for countries all over the world at the United Nations.

Early Life and School
Philémon Yang was born in a place called Jikejem-Oku, which is in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. He went to the University of Yaoundé where he studied law. This means he learned about rules and legal systems.
Philémon Yang's Career
Starting in Government
After finishing his studies, Yang worked as a prosecutor. This is a lawyer who works for the government in court. In 1975, he joined the government as a Deputy Minister. He later became the Minister of Mines and Energy in 1979. He held this position until 1984.
Working as an Ambassador in Canada
From 1984 to 2004, Philémon Yang worked as Cameroon's Ambassador to Canada. An ambassador is a country's official representative in another country. He spent 20 years in Canada, helping to build good relationships between Cameroon and Canada.
When Cameroon joined the Commonwealth of Nations, his title changed to High Commissioner. During his time in Canada, he worked hard to get financial help for Cameroon. He also helped lead talks about important environmental agreements, like the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. This protocol is about keeping the environment safe when dealing with new technologies.
Returning to Politics in Cameroon
In 2004, Yang came back to Cameroon and took on a new role as Assistant Secretary-General of the Presidency. This was a key position in the President's office. In 2008, he became the head of the board for Cameroon Airlines Corporation, which is the national airline.
Becoming Prime Minister of Cameroon

On June 30, 2009, President Paul Biya chose Philémon Yang to be the new Prime Minister of Cameroon. This was a big change in the government. The President made these changes to address public concerns, including issues with rising food prices.
As Prime Minister, Yang was in charge of the government's daily activities. He worked in this important role for almost ten years. He is known as the longest-serving Prime Minister in Cameroon's history. He left the position on January 4, 2019.
Leading the United Nations General Assembly
On June 6, 2024, Philémon Yang was elected to be the President of the United Nations General Assembly. This is a very important international role. He took over from Dennis Francis on September 10, 2024. In this role, he helps guide discussions and decisions among all the countries that are part of the United Nations.
