Trying to Become UN Secretary-General

In 1981, Salim Ahmed Salim wanted to become the Secretary-General of the United Nations. He ran against Kurt Waldheim, who was already serving. Salim had strong support from African and non-aligned countries. China also supported him.

However, the United States did not want Salim to be Secretary-General. They saw him as too critical of their policies. The Soviet Union also opposed him.

The election was very close and went on for 16 rounds of voting over six weeks. Neither side would give in. In the end, both Salim and Waldheim decided to step down. This allowed other candidates to be chosen.

In 1996, Salim was considered for the role again. The US wanted him, but France said they would not support him. So, he was not nominated.
