Tijjani Muhammad-Bande (born 7 December 1957) is a Nigerian diplomat, academic, and political scientist. He was the president of the United Nations General Assembly for its 74th session, serving from September 2019 to September 2020.
Before that, he was the vice president for the 71st session of the UN General Assembly from September 2016 to September 2017. Since 2017, he has been Nigeria's main representative to the United Nations. He also led the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Nigeria from 2010 to 2016. From 2004 to 2009, he was the vice chancellor of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University.
Early Life and Education
Tijjani Muhammad-Bande was born in Zagga, a town in what is now Kebbi State, Nigeria. He went to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1979.
He then moved to the United States to study at Boston University. There, he received a Master of Arts degree in political science in 1981. Later, he earned his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Toronto in Canada in 1987.
Career Highlights
In the 1980s, Muhammad-Bande taught at the Usman Danfodio University in Sokoto, Nigeria. He became a full professor in 1998.
From 2000 to 2004, he worked as the director-general of the African Training and Research Centre in Administration for Development in Tangier, Morocco. He then served as the vice chancellor of Usman Danfodio University from 2004 to 2009.
After that, he was appointed director-general of Nigeria's National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies. He held this important position from 2010 to 2016. In January 2021, President Buhari re-appointed him as Nigeria's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York.
