Who Was Diego Montoya Mendoza?

Diego Montoya Mendoza was born in a town called Mijancas in Spain on July 23, 1593. He grew up to become a significant figure in the church.

His Journey as a Bishop

In 1633, when Pope Urban VIII was the leader of the Catholic Church, Diego Montoya Mendoza was chosen to be the Bishop of Popayán. Popayán is a city located in what is now Colombia.

A year later, on December 27, 1634, he was officially made a bishop. This special ceremony is called a consecration. It was performed by Pedro de Oviedo Falconi, who was the Bishop of Quito.

Serving in Trujillo

Later, in 1637, the King of Spain chose him for another important role. Pope Urban VIII confirmed this choice on October 5, 1637. Diego Montoya Mendoza then became the Bishop of Trujillo. Trujillo is a city in what is now Peru.

He served as the Bishop of Trujillo until he passed away on April 14, 1640. He was 46 years old when he died.

An Appointment After His Death

Interestingly, even after his death, Pope Urban VIII appointed him to another position. Just two days after he died, on July 16, 1640, he was named the Bishop of Cuzco. Cuzco is another important city in Peru.
