Dieter Moebius (born January 16, 1944 – died July 20, 2015) was a musician and composer. He was born in Switzerland but became a German citizen. He was famous for his electronic music and was a key member of two important bands: Cluster and Harmonia. These bands played a type of music called krautrock.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Dieter Moebius studied art in Berlin, Germany. He also worked as a cook. In 1969, he met Conrad Schnitzler and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Schnitzler had started a place called the Zodiak Free Arts Lab, which was a space for experimental art.

The three of them formed a music group called Kluster. They played music that was made up on the spot, called improvisation.

Cluster and Harmonia

After Conrad Schnitzler left the group, Moebius and Roedelius changed their band's name to Cluster. They moved to a small village called Forst. Cluster made several important albums, like Zuckerzeit (1974) and Sowiesoso (1976). Moebius used his art training to design the covers for many of Cluster's albums.

Around the same time, Moebius and Roedelius started another band called Harmonia. They teamed up with Michael Rother from the band Neu!. Harmonia released albums such as Musik von Harmonia (1974) and Deluxe (1975).

A famous musician named Brian Eno admired both Cluster and Harmonia. He later worked with both groups.

Solo Work and Collaborations

Dieter Moebius also started making his own music in the 1970s. He worked with many other musicians on different projects. One of his important partners was Conny Plank, a music producer. Together, they made influential albums like Zero Set in 1983, which also featured Mani Neumeier from the band Guru Guru.

Dieter Moebius passed away on July 20, 2015, after battling cancer.
