History of Dieterich
Dieterich was first settled in 1880. This happened when a railroad line was built through the area. The village was named after its founder, a person named Michael Dieterich. A post office has been open in Dieterich since 1881, helping people send and receive mail.

Dieterich is found in the eastern part of Effingham County. A main road, Illinois Route 33, goes right through the village. This road can take you about 10 miles (16 km) northwest to Effingham or about 13 miles (21 km) southeast to Newton. The village covers an area of about 1.37 square miles (3.54 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
