Carex heteroneura is a type of plant called a sedge. Its common name is different-nerve sedge. You can find this plant growing in the western parts of Canada and the United States. It likes to live in wet mountain areas, like forests and open meadows.
What Does Different-Nerve Sedge Look Like?
This sedge grows in clumps, with many stems close together. These stems can be as tall as 3 feet (about 1 meter), but they are often much shorter.
The plant's appearance can change quite a bit. Even its special features, like the tiny scales on its flowers and the coverings around its fruits, can look different.
Generally, its flower clusters, called spikes, are shaped like oblongs or cylinders. They are packed tightly with small, two-colored spikelets. The fruit covering, known as a perigynium, is usually greenish or purplish. It has a short, rounded tip.
