Difficult is a small, unincorporated community located in Smith County, Tennessee, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government.
This community is found just north of Tennessee State Route 85. It sits about halfway between two other places: Defeated to the south and Kempville to the east. A stream called Defeated Creek, which flows into the Cumberland River, also runs through Difficult.
The History of Difficult
The name "Difficult" has an interesting story behind it. One popular tale says that when the people living there tried to get a post office, their application was sent back. The reason given was that the name they had chosen was "too difficult" to use. This led to the community officially being named Difficult.
