Defeated is a small place in Smith County, Tennessee, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is a group of homes and businesses that is not officially a city or town.
Defeated is located northeast of Carthage. It sits along Defeated Creek. This creek flows into the Cumberland River. Part of the creek and river here are now part of Cordell Hull Lake. You can reach Defeated by driving on State Route 85.
How Did Defeated Get Its Name?
The name "Defeated" comes from something that happened a long time ago. This was in the late 1700s. An early explorer named John Peyton was exploring the area. He and his team were camping by the creek.
During their camp, a group of Cherokee people, led by a chief named Hanging Maw, came upon them. The explorers had to leave the area. This event, where Peyton's group had to retreat, led to the creek and the community being named "Defeated."
The Old Post Office
Defeated used to have its own post office. It opened in 1824. For many years, until 1880, the post office was called Montrose.
Then, in 1880, its name was changed to Defeated. The post office served the community for over 100 years. It finally closed in 1929.
