What is Dilemma Geyser?

Dilemma Geyser is a natural water feature that sometimes shoots hot water and steam into the air. It's located in a famous national park known for its many geothermal wonders. Geysers are rare because they need a special mix of heat, water, and underground plumbing to erupt.

How Often Does Dilemma Geyser Erupt?

Eruptions from Dilemma Geyser are not very common. When it does erupt, the show can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. The water can shoot up to 10 feet (3.0 m) high in the springtime. During the rest of the year, eruptions are usually between 1 to 4 feet (0.30 to 1.22 m) tall. If it erupts more than once, the time between eruptions is usually 2 to 10 minutes.

The Story Behind Its Name

Before 1989, Dilemma Geyser's eruptions were very small. Only a few drops of water would reach above the grass. However, the ground around its two vents had clear channels. These channels looked like they were made by a lot of water flowing away. This created a "dilemma" for scientists: how could such tiny eruptions create such big channels? This mystery is how the geyser got its name.

In 1989, the geyser started having stronger eruptions. These new, more powerful eruptions produced enough water to explain the channels. So, the "dilemma" was finally solved!

When Was Dilemma Geyser Last Active?

Dilemma Geyser was active in 1992. It also erupted sometimes in the early 2000s. The last time it was reported erupting was in 2006. Geysers can change over time, and some become less active or even stop erupting.
