Dillon Falls is a series of fast-moving rapids located in the U.S. state of Oregon. You can find them near the city of Bend, within the beautiful Deschutes National Forest. These falls are known for being a big challenge for people who enjoy whitewater sports, as they are rated as a difficult Class 5 on the International Scale of River Difficulty.

What Are Dillon Falls?

Dillon Falls isn't a tall, single waterfall like you might imagine. Instead, it's a section of the Deschutes River where the water drops quickly over a short distance. The river here drops about 15 feet (4.6 meters) over a steep slope. This creates very powerful and fast-moving water, making it a Class 5 rapid. This means it's only for very experienced whitewater rafters and kayakers.

Why Are They Hard to See?

Unlike other popular spots nearby, Dillon Falls is not easy to view. It's often hidden from common viewpoints, which is why it's not as well-known or photographed as other falls. However, there are trails that can give you a better, though still limited, look at the rapids.

Who Were They Named After?

The falls were named after a person named Leander Dillon. He was a homesteader, which means he settled on and farmed land in the area. Leander Dillon passed away in 1907.

Navigating Dillon Falls

The rapids at Dillon Falls start with a dramatic 15-foot (4.6-meter) drop. After this initial plunge, the water becomes very rough and powerful. There's even a tree in the middle of the rapids that makes it more challenging. Further downstream, the rapids become a bit calmer, changing to Class 2 and 3.

Only very experienced rafters should try to go through Dillon Falls. Many choose to exit the river downstream at Lava Island Falls after navigating this difficult section.

Important Safety Information

The area of the Deschutes River just before Dillon Falls is very calm and wide. This can be misleading. Because the falls are around a bend in the river, and the sound of the rushing water is muffled by the surrounding lava rock, it's hard to hear them coming.

There are warning signs before the falls. It's very important to pay attention to these signs, even if the water seems calm. Ignoring warnings in calm water can be very dangerous when powerful rapids are just ahead. Always be aware of your surroundings and follow all safety guidelines when on the river.
