Dillon Michael Tate (born May 1, 1994) is an American professional baseball pitcher. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays. Dillon started his baseball journey playing in college. He was picked by the Texas Rangers in the first round of the 2015 MLB draft. Later, he was traded to the New York Yankees and then to the Orioles. He made his big league debut with the Orioles in 2019.

Growing Up and College Baseball

Dillon Tate grew up in Claremont, California. He went to Claremont High School. Even though he made the baseball team, he didn't play much as a freshman.

To get better, he trained at the Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California. After high school, he wasn't chosen in the MLB draft.

Dillon then went to the University of California, Santa Barbara. He played college baseball for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. Only two top college teams offered him a scholarship.

As a freshman, he pitched only a few innings. His earned run average (ERA), which measures how many runs a pitcher allows, was 9.00. That summer, he worked hard and gained a lot of muscle.

In his second year, he became the team's closer. A closer is a pitcher who finishes the game. He had a great season with a 1.45 ERA and 12 saves. A save means he protected his team's lead. He also had 46 strikeouts.

For his junior year in 2015, Dillon was expected to be the closer again. But he became a starting pitcher because another player got hurt. He started 14 games. He finished with an 8–5 win–loss record and a 2.26 ERA. He also struck out 111 batters.

Professional Baseball Career

Starting with the Texas Rangers

Dillon Tate was seen as one of the best young players for the 2015 MLB draft. The Texas Rangers picked him as the fourth player overall. He signed with the Rangers and received a $4.2 million signing bonus. This is a payment given to a player when they sign their first professional contract.

Dillon started his professional career with the Spokane Indians. He later moved up to the Hickory Crawdads in 2016. He spent some time on the disabled list because of a leg injury. He pitched 65 innings for Hickory. His ERA was 5.12, and he had 55 strikeouts. His fastball speed also dropped a bit during this time.

Moving to the New York Yankees

On August 1, 2016, the Rangers traded Dillon Tate to the New York Yankees. Two other players were also part of this trade. In return, the Rangers received Carlos Beltrán.

The Yankees sent Dillon to the Charleston RiverDogs. He pitched as a reliever for the rest of 2016. A reliever is a pitcher who comes into the game after the starter. The Yankees wanted him to work on his pitching form. He had a 3.12 ERA in 17.1 innings with Charleston. After the season, he played in the Arizona Fall League.

In 2017, Dillon missed the start of the season due to a shoulder injury. He then made nine starts for the Tampa Yankees. He had a good 2.62 ERA there. In August, the Yankees promoted him to the Trenton Thunder. He finished the season with a 1–2 record and a 3.24 ERA.

Playing for the Baltimore Orioles

On July 24, 2018, the New York Yankees traded Dillon Tate to the Baltimore Orioles. Two other players, Cody Carroll and Josh Rogers, were also part of this trade. The Yankees received Zack Britton in return.

In November, the Orioles added Dillon to their 40-man roster. This protects players from being picked by other teams. In 2018, Dillon played for two Double-A teams. He had a 7–5 record with a 4.16 ERA. He started the 2019 season back with the Bowie Baysox.

On July 26, 2019, the Orioles called Dillon up to the major leagues. He made his MLB debut on July 29. He allowed three runs in two innings pitched. He finished his first season with a 6.43 ERA in 16 games.

In 2020, Dillon pitched in 12 games for Baltimore. He had a 3.24 ERA and 14 strikeouts. In 2021, he played in 62 games for the Orioles. He had a 0-6 record and a 4.39 ERA.

Dillon had a great year in 2022. He played in 67 games for Baltimore. He had a 4-4 record and a 3.05 ERA. He also recorded 5 saves.

In 2023, Dillon signed a $1.5 million contract with the Orioles. This helped him avoid salary arbitration. However, he had a flexor strain injury. This meant he missed the first month of the season.

Dillon made 29 appearances for Baltimore in 2024. He had a 4.59 ERA. On August 28, 2024, the Orioles removed him from their roster. This is called being designated for assignment.

Time with the Toronto Blue Jays

On September 1, 2024, the Toronto Blue Jays picked up Dillon Tate. This is called being claimed off waivers. He played in 4 games for Toronto. He had a 5.40 ERA. On November 22, the Blue Jays decided not to offer him a new contract. This made him a free agent, meaning he can sign with any team.
