About Dimitrios Vergos
Dimitrios Vergos was the son of Nicholas and Helen Vergos Kleitsou. His father was involved in managing church and school matters in their community. Dimitrios served in the Greek Army. He fought in wars for Greece, as shown by a document from 1920 that allowed him to join sports events.
In 1939, Dimitrios and his brothers, Constantine and Stylianos, gave a piece of land to their community. A post office and a school were built there, which helped the local people.
Dimitrios' Sports Career
Dimitrios Vergos was a talented athlete who competed in wrestling, weightlifting, and shot put. He was part of several sports clubs, including the Alexandria Sport Fans Association, Milo Alexandria, and Panellinios.
His sports journey began on May 8, 1909. He took part in games held in Alexandria, organized by the local Greek Sport Fans Association. In these games, Dimitrios won first place in two weightlifting events:
- One-arm weightlifting, lifting 78 kilograms (about 172 pounds).
- Two-handed weightlifting, lifting 110 kilograms (about 242 pounds).
He also placed second in shot put, throwing the shot almost 9.77 meters (about 32 feet).
In 1910, Dimitrios competed in the big Panhellenic-Panegyptian Games. These were special games for athletes from all over Greece and Egypt. He won first place again in both weightlifting styles:
- Two-handed lift: 119.5 kilograms (about 263 pounds).
- One-handed lift: 76 kilograms (about 167 pounds).
Wrestling Champion
In 1912, Dimitrios became the national champion in wrestling for Greece. Because he was the champion, the Greek Olympic Committee chose him to join the Greek team for the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden.
Competing in the 1920 Olympics
Dimitrios Vergos went on to compete in the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. He took part in two types of wrestling: Greco-Roman and freestyle. Other Greek wrestlers with him were Sotirios Notaras and Pavlidis Vasileios.
Dimitrios earned his spot on the Olympic team after winning tryouts held on June 21, 1920, at the Panathenaic Stadium. He won first place in the heavyweight wrestling category.
- In Greco-Roman wrestling, he competed in the heavyweight division. He lost in the second round. Reports say that many people in the audience disagreed with the referee's decision in that match.
- He also competed in weightlifting. He reached the second round but was defeated by a Swedish athlete. He finished in ninth place overall in this event.
