Dingle is a small, quiet community in Bear Lake County, Idaho. It is located in the southeastern part of the state. Even though it's not an official town, it has its own ZIP code, which is 83233.
History
The area around Dingle has an interesting past. From 1848 to 1850, a fur trapper and blacksmith known as "Peg-Leg Smith" set up a trading post here. This post was right on the Oregon Trail, a famous route pioneers used to travel west.
The first people to settle permanently in Dingle arrived in 1871. They were a group of members from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often called Mormons. They came together to build a new community.
Over the years, Dingle remained a small place. In 1909, about 40 people lived there. By 1960, the population had grown a bit to an estimated 100 people.
Notable People
Dingle is known as the birthplace of Beulah Ream Allen (1897-1989). She was a remarkable physician who served during World War II. She was even a prisoner of war (POW) during the war. For her bravery and service, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is one of the highest awards a civilian can get in the United States.
