District E is a special neighborhood in Manchester, New Hampshire. It has five old houses that were built a long time ago. These houses were made for important workers, called overseers, at the huge Amoskeag Manufacturing Company textile mills. You can find District E on McGregor Street, right by the Merrimack River. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 because it's an important part of history.
Discovering District E
District E is located near the old Amoskeag Manufacturing Company millyard. This company was once one of the biggest textile makers in the world! The neighborhood is on the west side of McGregor Street. It is just north of the Notre Dame Bridge.
What Do the Houses Look Like?
The district has five houses made of wood. They are all about two and a half stories tall. When they were first built, they had wooden clapboards on the outside. These houses are built in a style called Stick style. This means they have different roof shapes and parts that stick out. Each house also has a small kitchen area. They used to have a carriage barn in the back too.
Why Were These Houses Built?
The Amoskeag Company started building mills in the 1830s and 1840s. At first, houses for supervisors were made of brick. They were also built further away from the mills. These first houses were all on the east side of the river.
Later, mills were built on the west side of the river. But there were no houses for workers there. So, these five houses were built in 1889. They were made for supervisors who worked in those new mills. The houses originally had a great view of the river. However, a new mill was built in 1909. This new building blocked the river view.
