You can find Dixon Peak in the Southern Alps, a long mountain range on the South Island of New Zealand. It's located in the Mackenzie District, inside the beautiful Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. It's actually quite close to New Zealand's tallest mountain, Aoraki / Mount Cook.
Dixon Peak is a favorite spot for mountain climbers. Many climbers use it to practice their skills before trying to climb the much bigger Aoraki / Mount Cook. It's a great place to learn about snow and ice climbing.
How Dixon Peak Got Its Name
Dixon Peak was named after a famous mountaineer called Marmaduke Dixon (1862–1918). A person named Noel Brodrick gave the mountain this name. Marmaduke Dixon was known for his climbing adventures.
Don't Get Confused!
It's important not to mix up this Dixon Peak with another mountain called Mount Dixon (Grey District). The other Mount Dixon is much smaller and is located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) to the northeast, near the Taramakau River and Harper Pass. Even though they share a similar name, they are two different mountains!
