Docas was once a small community, or "settlement," located in Monterey County, California. It was a place where people lived and worked, but over time, it became a "former settlement," meaning it no longer exists as an active town or village.

Docas: A Glimpse into the Past

Docas was situated about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north-northwest of a town called San Ardo. It sat at an elevation of 404 feet (123 meters) above sea level. This small spot was important because it was located along the Southern Pacific Railroad line, which was a major way to travel and transport goods across California in the past.

Where Was Docas Located?

Docas was in Monterey County, a large county in the central part of California. This area is known for its beautiful coastline and rich agricultural lands, especially in the Salinas Valley. Even though Docas is no longer an active settlement, it still appeared on maps made by the USGS as late as 1943. This shows that it was recognized as a specific place for many years.

How Docas Got Its Name

The name "Docas" is quite interesting! It was created by combining parts of the names of two nearby towns. The "do" comes from the end of "San Ardo", and the "cas" comes from the end of "San Lucas". Docas was located right between these two towns, so its name was a clever way to show its position.
