History of San Ardo
The town of San Ardo started when the railroad arrived in 1887. A man named M.J. Brandenstein, who owned the land, helped plan the town.
Before it was called San Ardo, the community was known as San Bernardo. The post office opened in 1886 with this name. However, to avoid confusion with the larger city of San Bernardino, California, the name was changed to San Ardo in 1887.
Geography and Location
San Ardo is located in the southern part of the wide Salinas Valley. This valley narrows down where the California Coast Ranges meet. To the west are the Santa Lucia Mountains, and to the east are the Cholame Hills and the Diablo Range.
U.S. Route 101 runs just west of San Ardo. This highway connects the town to King City (18 miles northwest) and Salinas (66 miles northwest), which is the main city of Monterey County. If you go southeast on the highway, you'll reach Paso Robles (33 miles away).
The community covers about 0.4 square miles (1.1 square kilometers) of land. The Salinas River flows north along the western edge of San Ardo.
San Ardo's Climate

Economy and Jobs
A big part of San Ardo's economy comes from the huge San Ardo Oil Field, which is about 5 miles (8 km) south of town. Many local jobs involve servicing this oil field.
