About Domenico Martinelli
Domenico Martinelli was born in Lucca, a city in Tuscany, Italy. He became a priest in his hometown. He studied architecture at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. There, he also taught others about architecture and how to draw buildings in perspective.
Martinelli traveled a lot during his life. He visited many countries across Europe. These included places within Italy, and also Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, Poland, and the Netherlands. He might not be as famous as some other architects from his time. However, he often worked with well-known architects like Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt.
Martinelli had a big impact on the Baroque style. One of his most famous works is the Stadtpalais Liechtenstein (Town Palace) in Vienna. He designed this palace between 1692 and 1705. It features a grand staircase, inspired by Bernini's Chigi-Odescalchi Palace in Rome.
He also designed other important buildings. These include the Palais Harrach, the Gartenpalais (Garden Palace), and the Kaunitz Palace. The Kaunitz Palace is in Slavkov (Austerlitz). Martinelli introduced the "cour d'honneur" (a special type of main courtyard) in this palace. In his later years, after teaching at the San Luca Academy, he became ill. He returned to his hometown of Lucca, where he passed away.
