Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Domenico Zipoli (1688-1726) was an Italian composer from the Baroque period. He is famous for his music. Zipoli traveled to South America and became a Jesuit missionary. He taught music to the Guaraní people in places called the Reductions of Paraguay. He died in Córdoba, which is now in Argentina. Many people remember him as a very talented musician among the Jesuit missionaries.

Early Life and Music Training

Domenico Zipoli was born in Prato, Italy. He started learning music there. In 1707, a powerful leader named Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, helped him. Zipoli then studied with a famous organ player, Giovani Maria Casini, in Florence.

In 1708, Zipoli continued his music studies. He learned from other important composers. These included Alessandro Scarlatti in Naples, and later Bernardo Pasquini in Rome. During these early years, he wrote two large musical works called oratorios. These were San Antonio di Padova (1712) and Santa Caterina, Virgine e martire (1714).

Around 1715, Zipoli became the organist at a very important church. This was the Church of the Gesù in Rome. It was the main church for the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. Early the next year, he finished his most famous work. It was a collection of pieces for keyboard instruments. The collection was called Sonate d'intavolatura per organo e cimbalo.

Becoming a Jesuit Musician in South America

For reasons that are not fully clear, Zipoli decided to travel to Sevilla, Spain. In 1716, he joined the Society of Jesus. He wanted to become a missionary and go to the Reductions of Paraguay. These were special communities in Spanish Colonial America.

While still training to be a Jesuit, he left Spain. He sailed with 53 other missionaries. They arrived in Buenos Aires on July 13, 1717. Zipoli continued his training and studies in Córdoba. This city is in what is now Argentina. He lived there from 1717 to 1724.

During these years, Zipoli was the music director for the local Jesuit church. His music became well-known in places like Lima, Peru. Sadly, Zipoli became sick with an unknown disease. He died in the Jesuit house in Córdoba on January 2, 1726. His burial place has never been found.

Zipoli's Musical Legacy

Today, Domenico Zipoli is still well-known for his keyboard music. Many of his pieces are easy enough for new musicians to play. You can find them in most music books for beginners.

His Italian compositions have always been popular. More recently, some of his church music from South America was found. These pieces were discovered in Chiquitos, Bolivia. They include two Masses, psalm settings, hymns, and a Te Deum laudamus. Another Mass found in Potosí, Bolivia seems to be a mix of his other works.

Most of his dramatic music, like his oratorios, is now lost. However, three parts of a special "Mission opera" have been linked to Zipoli. This opera, called San Ignacio de Loyola, was put together by Martin Schmid. It was found in Chiquitos many years after Zipoli's death.
