Domingo Castillejo (died 1786) was an important Spanish scientist. He was a Spanish botanist, which means he studied plants. He was also a surgeon and a professor. Castillejo spent many years teaching and researching plants in southern Spain.

A Spanish Botanist and Professor

Domingo Castillejo was a professor from 1770 to 1786. He taught at the Royal Naval College of Surgery in Cádiz, Spain. His main subjects were botany and materia medica. Materia medica is the study of natural substances used as medicines.

During his time as a professor, Castillejo focused on the plants of the southern Iberian Peninsula. This area includes southern Spain and Portugal. He learned a lot about the different types of plants growing there.

His Important Work

Castillejo also worked for the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid. He was their contact person in Cádiz. This was a very important job. Cádiz was a major port city. Many ships arrived there from the New World (the Americas).

These ships often brought new and exciting plants. Castillejo received these plants. He then helped them get used to the Spanish climate. This process is called acclimatization. After the plants were settled, he sent them to other plant nurseries. These nurseries were located all over Spain and the Canary Islands.

Honored by Science

Another famous botanist, José Celestino Mutis, lived at the same time as Castillejo. Mutis decided to honor Castillejo's work. He named a whole group of plants after him. This plant group is called Castilleja. It is a way for scientists to remember important people.

After Castillejo passed away in 1786, one of his students took over his job. This student was named Francisco Arjona. Arjona continued Castillejo's important studies. He kept researching the plants of the Cádiz region.
