Early Life and Education
Domingo Caycedo was born in Santa Fe de Bogotá on August 4, 1783. His parents were Luis Dionisio Caicedo y Flórez and Josefa Sanz de Santamaría y Prieto. Both of his parents came from important families during the time Colombia was a Spanish colony. His family owned many large farms in the Tolima area.
Domingo studied law at the Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Bogotá. This school is now known as Universidad del Rosario. He even became a deputy headmaster there. But he soon decided that he didn't want to be a lawyer. Instead, he chose a path in the military and politics.
He traveled to Spain and joined the army to fight against Napoleon. He also worked as a secretary in the Spanish Congress, called the Cortes Generales. In 1815, he married Juana Jurado y Bertendona in Bogotá. They had eight children together. Domingo Caycedo passed away in Puente Aranda, near Bogotá, on July 1, 1843.
Military Service
When Domingo Caycedo heard about the important events of July 20, 1810, he returned to America. He came back with Vicente Bolívar, who was the brother of Simón Bolívar. Simón Bolívar would later become a very famous leader and the first president of Colombia.
Caycedo joined the Colombian revolutionary army. He became an advisor to General Antonio Nariño. He fought in several battles, including the battle of la Cuchilla del Tambo . In one battle, he was captured by Spanish troops. He was put on trial and found guilty, which meant he could have been sentenced to death. Luckily, his life was saved thanks to his family's influence. He was set free but had to stay away from the war. He returned to public life after the revolutionaries won the Battle of Boyacá on August 7, 1819.
Political Journey
After the big victory on August 7, 1819, Domingo Caycedo returned to public life. He was supported by Simón Bolívar. In 1827, he became the Governor of Neiva. He was also elected to Congress and became a General in the army.
Caycedo became a close friend and advisor to Bolívar. In 1829, Bolívar made him the Secretary of the Interior. A year later, he became the Secretary of State. After that, Caycedo was chosen to be the president of the “Consejo de Estado” (which was like an early version of the Supreme Court).
Serving as President
On April 1, 1830, President Simón Bolívar took a break from his duties in Bogotá because he was sick. Domingo Caycedo stepped in and became the Interim President. This was the first of many times he would serve as president in this way.
Later that year, Bolívar officially resigned from the presidency. Congress then chose Don Joaquín de Mosquera as the new president and Caycedo as the vice president. However, Mosquera was very ill. So, Caycedo took over as acting president on August 2, 1830.
Caycedo was removed from power by a military takeover on September 5, 1830. This was led by a Venezuelan General named Rafael Urdaneta. But months later, with the help of the army, Caycedo announced that he was the rightful president again on April 11, 1831. He met with General Urdaneta to talk about the country's future. They reached an agreement, and Urdaneta recognized Caycedo as the acting president. So, Caycedo became president again on May 3, 1831.
As acting president, Caycedo called for a new Congress. On November 15, 1831, Congress elected General Francisco de Paula Santander as president. General José María Obando became the vice president.
Years later, Caycedo was elected to Congress again. He also became the Secretary of the Treasury. He served as interim president six more times when President José Ignacio de Márquez was away. During the presidency of Pedro Alcántara Herrán (1841-1845), Caycedo also acted as interim president twice when the president was temporarily absent.
