Domingo Ruíz is a neighborhood, also called a barrio, located in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Arecibo is a large town on the northern coast of Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 3,153 people lived in Domingo Ruíz. It's a part of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, which is a territory of the United States.
A Look Back: History of Domingo Ruíz
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 931 people lived in the Domingo Ruíz neighborhood at that time.
