Domingos António de Sequeira (born March 10, 1768, in Lisbon, Portugal – died March 8, 1837, in Rome, Italy) was a very important Portuguese painter. He worked for the royal family, especially for King John VI of Portugal.

Who Was Domingos Sequeira?
Domingos Sequeira was born in Belém, a part of Lisbon, Portugal. His family was not rich. He later changed his last name to Sequeira. He started studying art in Lisbon. Then, he moved to Rome, Italy, to learn from another painter named Antonio Cavallucci.
When he was just thirteen, Domingos showed amazing talent. A person named F. de Setubal hired him to help paint at the João Ferreiras Palace. Sequeira lived in Rome from 1788 to 1794. During this time, he became an honorary member of the Academy of St Luke. After two more years of study in Italy, he returned to Portugal. He was so well-known that he quickly received important jobs. He painted for churches and palaces. These paintings included religious scenes and big historical pictures.
Working for the Royal Family
In 1802, Domingos Sequeira became the first court painter. This meant he painted many artworks for the royal family. He painted for the prince regent (who later became King John VI) and other members of the court.
He also designed a valuable silver set. The people of Portugal gave this gift to Wellington. Wellington was a famous general. Sequeira also designed a monument built in 1820 in Rossio square in Lisbon.
In 1823, he visited Paris, France. There, he tried new art methods like lithography and etching. In 1825, he painted "Death of Camões." Many people think this painting was one of the first "Romantic" style paintings in Portugal.
Later Life and Art
Domingos Sequeira spent his last years in Rome. He focused mostly on religious paintings. He also worked as the head of the Portuguese Academy there. In the late 1820s, he saw an art show by the famous painter Turner. This show inspired some of his best works. One example is his painting Adoration of the Magi from 1828. He passed away in Rome in 1837.

Some of Domingos Sequeira's most famous paintings include Miracle of Ourique and The Adoration of the Magi. You can find many of his artworks in important places. These include the Mafra National Palace and the Ajuda National Palace. Many are also in churches and palaces in Lisbon. The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (National Museum of Ancient Art) in Lisbon has a great collection of his paintings.
