Dominic also has an older brother named Christopher, who was born in 1953 and also became an actor. Dominic's parents separated when he was twelve years old.

When Dominic was just 14, he starred in a movie called The Go-Between (1971). In this film, he played the main character, Leo Colston. Leo was a boy who carried secret messages between two people who were in love. He also had a very important 13th birthday in the story. Dominic did such a great job that he won a special award in 1971. It was called the BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. The movie itself won the top prize, the Palme d'Or, at the famous Cannes film festival.

After his early success, Dominic Guard continued acting. He appeared in several other movies. These included Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) and The Count of Monte Cristo (1975).
