Dominique Claude Rocheteau (born 14 January 1955) is a famous French former football player. He was a winger, which means he played on the sides of the field. He was known for being very fast and skillful.

Dominique Rocheteau played for the French national team in three FIFA World Cups. He scored at least one goal in each of these tournaments. He was also part of the team that won the UEFA Euro 1984 championship. At the club level, he won four French league titles and three French Cups. He also played in the final of the 1976 European Cup Final.

Starting at Saint-Étienne

Dominique Rocheteau started his professional football journey with AS Saint-Étienne. At that time, Saint-Étienne was one of the most successful and popular football teams in France. Fans nicknamed him l'Ange Vert, which means "The Green Angel". This was because of his graceful playing style and the team's green jerseys.

In 1976, Saint-Étienne reached the final of the European Cup. This was a very big European club competition. Rocheteau was injured, so he only played for the last eight minutes of the game. His team lost 1–0 to Bayern Munich.

Winning Titles with Saint-Étienne

During his time with Saint-Étienne, Rocheteau helped them win the French league title, called Division 1, three times. They won in 1974, 1975, and 1976. He also won the Coupe de France (French Cup) with them in 1977.

One of his most memorable moments was in 1976. Saint-Étienne was playing against Dynamo Kyiv in the European Cup quarter-finals. They had lost the first game 2–0. But in the second game, Rocheteau scored a crucial goal in extra time. This helped his team win 3–0 and move on to the next round.

Moving to Paris Saint-Germain and Toulouse

In 1980, Rocheteau moved to Paris Saint-Germain. With this club, he won another Division 1 title in 1986. He also won two more Coupes de France in 1982 and 1983.

After seven years with Paris Saint-Germain, he joined Toulouse FC in 1987. He played for two seasons there before he retired from professional football in 1989.

Dominique Rocheteau played for the France national football team from 1975 to 1986. He played in 49 matches and scored 15 goals for his country. He was a key player for France during this period.

World Cup Appearances

Rocheteau played in three FIFA World Cup tournaments. These are the biggest football competitions for national teams.

  • In the 1978 World Cup, he played two matches and scored one goal. France did not get past the group stage that year.
  • Four years later, in the 1982 World Cup, he played four matches and scored two goals. He even scored a penalty in a shootout against West Germany in the semi-final, though France lost that game.
  • In the 1986 World Cup, he scored one goal and helped set up four others. He played four matches, including a big quarter-final game against Brazil.

Winning the European Championship

Dominique Rocheteau was also part of the French team that won the UEFA Euro 1984 championship. This was a huge victory for France. Even though he missed the final game due to an injury, he was a very important part of the team's success in the tournament.

Dominique Rocheteau grew up in a place called Étaules, Charente-Maritime. His father and grandfather had an oyster farm there. This was a family business, and his brother Antony later took it over.

After he stopped playing football, Rocheteau worked as a sports agent for a short time. He then became the head of the National Ethics Committee of the French Football Federation in 2002. This committee helps make sure football is played fairly and with good sportsmanship.

In 2010, he returned to his old club, Saint-Étienne. He has held different management roles there since then.
