Dominique Rocheteau, born on January 14, 1955, is a famous French former football player. He was known as a 'winger,' a player who runs along the sides of the field. He played for the French national team in three World Cups and helped them win the UEFA European Championship in 1984. He also won many titles with his club teams, including four French league titles and three French Cups.
Playing for Clubs
Dominique Rocheteau started his professional football journey with AS Saint-Étienne. At that time, Saint-Étienne was the most successful and popular football team in France. Rocheteau was a very skillful player who ran well on the right side of the field. People called him l'Ange Vert which means "The Green Angel."
In 1976, his team, Saint-Étienne, played in the 1976 European Cup Final. Rocheteau was injured, so he only played for the last eight minutes of the game. Saint-Étienne lost that final to Bayern Munich by a score of 1–0.
During his time with Saint-Étienne, he helped them win the French league title, called Division 1, three times (in 1974, 1975, and 1976). He also won the Coupe de France (French Cup) once.
In 1980, Rocheteau moved to Paris Saint-Germain. With this team, he won another Division 1 title in 1986. He also helped Paris Saint-Germain win the Coupe de France twice (in 1982 and 1983).
One of his most memorable moments was in 1976. He scored a goal in extra time against Dynamo Kyiv in a European Cup quarter-final. His goal helped Saint-Étienne win 3–0 after losing the first game 2–0. This amazing comeback allowed his team to move forward in the competition.
In 1987, he joined Toulouse FC. He played for two seasons there before he stopped playing professional football in 1989.
Playing for France
Dominique Rocheteau was an important player for the France national football team. He played in 49 games for his country between 1975 and 1986, scoring 15 goals.
He played in three FIFA World Cup tournaments: in 1978, 1982, and 1986. He scored at least one goal in each of these World Cups. He was also part of the French team that won the UEFA Euro 1984 championship. Even though he missed the final game due to an injury, he was a key part of the winning squad.
In the 1978 World Cup, France was eliminated early, but Rocheteau scored one goal. Four years later, in the 1982 World Cup, he scored two goals. He even scored a penalty in a penalty shootout against West Germany in the semi-final. In the 1986 World Cup, he scored one goal and helped set up four others. He played in the exciting quarter-final against Brazil.
Life After Football
Dominique Rocheteau grew up in a town called Étaules, where his family had an oyster farm. His brother later took over the family business.
After he stopped playing football, Rocheteau worked as a sports agent for a short time. He also became the head of the National Ethics Committee for the French Football Federation in 2002. This committee helps make sure football is played fairly and honestly.
In 2010, he returned to his old club, Saint-Étienne. He has held different management roles there, helping to guide the team from behind the scenes.
Rocheteau has also appeared in some movies, TV shows, and commercials.
